3 held at airport with gold worth Rs 82.5 lakh

Ahmedabad: In two separate cases, the air intelligence unit of the customs department detained three people — including two women — for smuggling in gold worth Rs 82.5 lakh at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Saturday. Mohammed Kasim Shingati, 48, was held along with his 17-year-old daughter. Mariyam Begum, 24, was detained in another case. Put together, the three were clandestinely carrying 3.03 kg of gold in their belts, pockets and undergarments.
According to sources, all three are first-carriers and chose to enter through Ahmedabad to escape Customs. The trio arrived by Emirates flight EK-538 from Dubai. "As many as 26 gold bars, weighing over 3 kg, were recovered. Mariyam hid gold bars inside her belt-cum-pouch while Shingati and his daughter had hidden the gold in their undergarment and pockets," said a custom official.
According to customs officials, the three were taken to the red channel after their movements appeared suspicious.
