Consumer forum fines Jet Airways for humiliating flier

The suburban district's consumer dispute redressal forum has held Jet Airways guilty of failing to provide required services to its consumer by causing embarrassment to him on board, and penalised the airline.

The forum has directed it to pay compensation of Rs25,000 to the complainant for the humiliation, insult, mental harassment and loss of business caused to him. It has also directed the airline to pay back the booking amount of Rs3,384 with 10% interest from November 2011, as well as Rs5000 towards the complainant's litigation cost.

According to Andheri resident Shirish Shah, he had booked an e-ticket on November 20, 2011, for travel on December 1 to Ahmedabad for business. Shah, in his complaint, said, "On December 1, I reached the airport at 7.45am, well before the flight could take off. I was issued a boarding pass too. However, minutes after boarding, a staff member told me that I had not been allotted a seat, and that the boarding pass issued was a stand-by one. I was made to disembark as they claimed the flight was overbooked."

Shah also claimed that after he was offloaded, an airline staffer told him that they can allot him a seat in the next flight, and offer a compensation of Rs2,000.
