Crane helps overweight woman alight from plane

Bhubaneswar: A flight from here to Delhi was delayed by an hour because an overweight woman passenger had to be helped to alight from the aircraft using a crane on Tuesday afternoon.

It took nearly 45 minutes for the airport officials to help the passenger get off the plane.

Airport sources said the Delhi-bound Air India flight (AAI-877) came from Delhi and reached Bhubaneswar at 1.22 pm. It was to leave for Delhi at 1.45 pm after the passengers had alighted. But it took off at 2.45 pm. Even after 60 per cent passengers got off on their own using the ladders, the woman couldn't manage to do so.

Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF) assistant commandant Subir Ghosh said the Delhi-bound passengers could board the plane only after the overweight passenger was brought down. "The airport has the facility to help disabled passengers alight. We used a special crane to help the passenger alight," said Ghosh. The Air India staff informed the terminal manager, who arranged for a crane that is kept at the airport.
