DGCA order on fund for clean-up opposed

Mumbai:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan seems to have created much confusion among different stakeholders of the country's aviation industry. For one, the aviation regulator's plan to ask airlines to take steps that will involve expenses has met with opposition from a consumer rights body, which has instead suggested that Rs 10-25 could be collected from flyers. That idea, in turn, has been opposed by a travel agents body stating that the PM's drive is not about collecting funds, but about ensuring cleanliness.

The DGCA has directed airlines to seek and remit "donations towards Swachhata Abhiyan at airports/in-flight during online ticket sales". It has also asked airlines to adopt villages and get involved in construction of toilets and "development of system of cleanliness", said a letter sent by the Air Passengers' Association of India (APAI), a consumer rights body, to civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathy Raju on Wednesday.
