First flight from Andal in January

New Delhi: The maiden flight from Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport in Andal, being developed by Bengal Aerotropolis Projects in a joint venture with Singapore’s Changi Airports International, will take off in January.

“Singapore Airlines is set to fly from the greenfield private airport to coincide with the event (Bengal Global Business summit),” state finance minister Amit Mitra said while inviting industry leaders to the summit at an investment roadshow here.

The two-day business meet will be held in Calcutta beginning January 7.

However, the Bengal Aerotropolis project still faces some challenges. Eight more electricity towers need to be shifted from the project site before a flight can take off. This can take four months.

Moreover, there are hurdles in the main access road from the National Highway to the airport, with owners of 100 acres refusing to give up land. The BJP has lent its support to these project-affected people.
