Night flights likely to be closed for 6 months at Mangalore International Airport

Mangalore: Airports Authority of India (AAI) has proposed to suspend night flights at Mangalore International Airport for six months from November.

It is to carry out runway-end safety area works on one side of the new concrete runway and constructing additional taxiways which connect runways with the aircraft parking area.

Director of the airport J.T. Radhakrishna told The Hindu that the airport had written to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) seeking permission to close down aircraft operations from 11.30 p.m. to 7.30 a.m. from November 1. Its permission is awaited.

He said that now the runway-end safety area on one side of the runway (towards Bajpe) was not even. The DGCA had asked the AAI to make it flat to make an aircraft stand there itself in case of overshooting the runway. Runway-end safety area grounded the aircraft there, if it overshot the runway.
