Dabolim airport to stay, not expand, may saturate in 5 years

Mapusa: The state government through its directorate of civil aviation has made it clear that there is limited scope for further expansion of Dabolim airport due to unavailability of land, that if the airport maintains its recent growth rate of 15% per annum it could saturate within five years, that it is unaware of any plans of the Navy to relax air-space restrictions at the airport and considers it an unlikely event, and that the airport will remain open for commercial civilian operations even after the airport at Mopa is made operational.

Replying to 140 queries raised by the 12 companies who have responded to the request for qualification (RFQ) for the proposed Greenfield airport at Mopa, the government has further stated that the environmental clearance for Mopa airport is expected from the ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) by March 2015, and that public hearings are being conducted towards the environmental impact assessment.
