Decorative plants to beautify Bhubaneswar airport

Bhubaneswar: The Biju Patnaik International Airport authorities will plant 2,500 decorative plants in and outside the new terminal building.

Airport sources said the green move is aimed at beautifying the state-of-the-art building, which was constructed on a modular pattern to allow room for further expansion.

"There is enough space for keeping low-height plants in pots. These will be kept at arrival and departure lounges, security areas, passengers' waiting lobby, near ticket counters and along the entrances and the exits," said airport director Sharad Kumar.

He said Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) will sponsor the drive. "Around Rs 40 lakh will be spent on it. MCL will maintain the plants for three years," he added.

An airport officer said there will be 65 varieties of plants. "The plants will be kept in plastic and brass pots. The brass pots, which are bigger in size, will be kept at selected places," said the officer. The new terminal wears an ethnic look with mural paintings, wall facade, masks and sculptures, reflecting Odisha's culture, heritage, maritime activities and tribal lifestyle. It has the capacity to handle 800 passengers at a time.
