Bangalore: Visiting Bengaluru to take part in the funeral of his younger brother added to the agony that Arun KV, an Oxford-based techie who hails from Bengaluru, was already feeling at the bereavement. Stern immigration officials at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) not only refused to allow his family to set foot on Indian soil, but also sent them back to UK by the same flight on Tuesday morning. Coming to terms with the shock of losing his only brother, he feels the response of the immigration officials, while technically correct, reeked of callousness.
The family's fault was that they flew in with the expired passport of their 9-year-old son who has UK citizenship. But even though British authorities were compassionate enough to understand the feelings of the family and agreed to allow them to fly, officials at KIA were unmoved and refused to allow them in, even though they only wanted to take part in the funeral.
