Guwahati: In a massive eviction drive undertaken by the Kamrup Metro district administration, civic staff today cleared away all illegal encroachments around the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport here.
Dr M Angamuthu, Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner, said over 50 shops and hoardings were evicted during the drive, which will now be followed up with a beautification plan for the area.
“The airport is in a very bad shape with roads around it taken over by encroachers who had set up illegal structures, including shops, for conducting business. This had led to problem with regard to smooth flow of traffic and many accidents had been reported over the months,” he said.
“After all, the Guwahati airport is the face of Assam and the North East and we have to maintain its ambience.” Angamuthu added.
There were a number of shops and hotels in front of the airport and local people had complained that business of sale and consumption of illicit liquor was going on at many of those establishments.
