Ahmedabad: Airlines provide wheelchairs for the old and infirm at airports across the world. But devouts arriving from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia found it was a case of missing wheelchairs at the old international airport in Ahmedabad. Hajis arriving at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport after their pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca were troubled to find no wheelchairs at the terminal after they landed.
The Hajis, many of whom had to catch another flight to Bhopal, had to make do with the luggage trolleys to tread the around 300 metres distance from the international to the domestic terminal. The faithfuls arrived in the Saudi Arabian airlines with which Air India has a tie-up. "Do we have any other option? The flight came past midnight and there were no wheelchairs at the airport, so instead of complaining we used trolleys to ferry our old family members. gave us some relief," said Zahir, who was on way to his native Bhopal with his grandparents.
Another was a 60-year-old man, also going Bhopal, who on condition of anonymity, said, "We have no idea what to do and whom to ask for the wheelchair so we used the trolley." An airport official who did not wish to be named admitted there were no wheelchairs at the international terminal.
