Surat: Along with the construction of the perimeter wall and undertaking other safety issues, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has decided to extend the runway at Surat airport from the existing 2,250 metres to 2,905 metres soon.
The extension of the runway, which was given in-principle approval in September 2014, would allow safe operations of twin-aisled wide-bodied aircraft from Surat airport. More airline companies would thus be encouraged to start operations from Surat airport, sources said.
After last Thursday's incident of a buffalo hitting a SpiceJet aircraft, the AAI authorites have focused their attention on the development of Surat airport and taking corrective measures to improve its infrastructural facilities and security.
