AAI fast tracks Surat airport development

Surat: The development work at Surat airport has been put on a fast track ever since the November 6 incident of a buffalo hitting a Spice Jet aircraft on the runway here.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI), which recently approved expansion of the runway from 2,250 metres to 2,905 metres, has now given an in-principle approval for the construction of a modular cargo terminal at Surat airport.

The terminal will be outsourced to a cargo handling company and expanded in a phased manner.
In reply to a letter by 'We Want Working Airport at Surat' member, EH Pathan, on Monday, AAI chairman Sudhir Raheja said, "The extension of the runway will allow bigger aircraft to land at Surat airport. A team of five AAI officers had conducted a detailed study on November 11 for uninterrupted execution of work at the airport."
Raheja said the total operational boundary wall length at the airport is 10.5 kilometre. Out of this total length, 4 km has already been built by AAI and it is in sound condition.
