Hyderabad: Customs officials at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport catch smugglers often — most of them try to smuggle in gold in different ways. But they had, perhaps, never encountered as desperate a man as Abdul Kareem.
He landed at the airport from Kuala Lumpur on Dec 24. According to sources, the customs officials detected that he was carrying gold coins illegally. When they asked him to show them the gold, Kareem was at his wits’ end. The prospect of losing his precious coins seemed unbearable.
