Customs officials extorting money from foreigners at IGI Airport

New Delhi: Foreigners arriving in Delhi are often fleeced at the IGI Airport itself. But the usual suspects like cab drivers and touts are not involved in all such cases. Rather, a section of Customs staff extort money and valuables from foreigners especially those arriving from developing countries.

Various embassies have raised concerns about such "extortion" with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Some have even submitted written complaints. Yet, there seems to be no immediate relief in sight for these visitors.

MAIL TODAY accessed some complaints which the embassies and passengers sent to the MEA and the Customs department. After going through these complaints, a pattern is found in these 'extortion' cases. Some of the victims are those arriving in India for medical treatment. Passengers arriving from the West Asia are also targeted in such covert operations.

Recently, the Embassy of Afghanistan forwarded a complaint to the MEA.
