DGCA threatens SpiceJet with show cause notice to stops advance bookings

New Delhi: SpiceJet seems to be in a fresh spot of trouble. After it remained defiant and continued to offer advance bookings for winter of 2015 on its website, aviation regulator DGCA warned the airline this eveing. The regulator has written to SpiceJet, asking it to comply with the earlier order which bars the airline from bookings beyond a month. Official sources said today the regulator will issue a show-cause notice tomorrow if the airline does not comply immediately. But Spicejet stuck to its stand. In a text message reply, COO SanjiV Kapoor merely said "we are in discussions with the DGCA on it".

The sources quoted earlier said SpiceJet's defiance may not immediately lead to suspension of operating permit by the DGCA. "But this could lead to a series of steps which may eventually get the airline's license suspended".

Kapoor has said earlier that advance bookings account for a third of the airline's revenues and stopping these would adversely affect the airline. Separately, the sources also said that the Airports Authority of India has decided to only wait till December 10 for SpiceJet to clear its dues. They said the airline owes AAI close to Rs 200 crore and after the 10th, AAI will put SpiceJet on cash and carry.
