EIA report pushes Mopa airport project forward

Panaji: The state government's Greenfield airport project at Mopa took a step towards fruition with the environmental impact assessment (EIA) study report stating that the project does not fall in the ecologically-sensitive zone, will have a significant positive impact on employment and occupation, and will improve the social and economic environment in the vicinity.

The summary of the EIA report, prepared by Engineers India Limited, a government of India undertaking, states that a total of 385 plant species, including wild, ornamental and cultivated, and belonging to 88 plant families were identified in the study area. A 10km-radius area around the proposed airport site at Mopa village was considered for assessment and evaluation of impacts on various components of environment during both construction and operational phases of the project. The report states that the present proposed airport site falls in Pernem taluka which has not been included in the ecologically-sensitive areas submitted by the government's high-level working group.
