Jet Airways averts accident

Kathmandu: A bird, suspected to be a black kite, crashed into an aircraft of Jet Airways en-route to Kathmandu from Mumbai today, prompting the plane to make an emergency landing at Tribhuvan International Airport.

All 125 passengers and crew members are safe, although the collision sparked fire in the aircraft’s left engine, causing it some damage.

Jet Airways Flight 9W 268 hit a bird just above Imadol area of Patan, when the plane was preparing to land at TIA at around 12 noon, according to airport officials. Sparks were seen when the plane was landing at TIA, they added.

TIA Managing Director Birendra Prasad Shrestha said nothing serious happened, as the plane landed safely. He said the aircraft, which was supposed to fly back to India could not do so because maintenance work continued till evening.

Deo Chandra Lal Karn, chief of Airport Operation Department at TIA Civil Aviation Office, said, “Initial study and feathers found inside the engine show that the bird that hit the plane today was a black kite, which is bigger than other normal birds that fly around TIA.”
