Ministers divided on Jewar airport

Noida:  The government on Tuesday told the Rajya Sabha it has no plans to change a rule that stipulates a minimum distance of 150km between two airports, virtually dashing hopes of the Greater Noida airport project being revived.

Minister of state for civil aviation Mahesh Sharma had promised to resuscitate the abandoned project, for which land has been completed, before he assumed office last month. But asked during question hour if the government was planning to amend the rule for the Jewar airport, which is less than 150km from the IGI airport in Delhi, Union civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju Pusapati answered in the negative.

Sharma, however, insisted that the rules did allow the government to examine proposals for airports less than 150km from each other on a "case to case basis". "Section A of paragraph 8.1 of the civil aviation policy says no greenfield airport would be allowed within an aerial distance of 150 km of an existing civilian airport," Sharma told TOI. "But Section B says that in case a greenfield airport is proposed to be set up within 150 km of an existing civilian airport, the impact on the existing airport would be examined. Such cases would be decided by the government on a case to case basis," he added.
