One-way pain for Pune air travellers

Pune: Demanding improved road network leading to the airport, Airport Advisory Committee (AAC) has asked the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to widen the Airport Road underpass to two-way to avoid airport-bound traffic congestion.

"Airport road is the first impression of the city. Considering that, the civic body should give priority to various roads approaching the airport. Everyday, thousands of passengers, mostly from IT or corporate sector, visiting the city face inconvenience while passing the Nagar Road. In other cities, people have a direct access to the city through flyovers or underpass from the airports. We had raised this issue in the meeting of AAC and complained to the PMC that they should make the vehicular underpass two-way," said Dhairyashil Vandekar, member of AAC.

Aimed to facilitate dedicated connectivity to the air travellers coming from Kalyani Nagar and taking the Nagar Road, the Airport Road underpass was started two months ago. But since the underpass is one-way, it has proved to be ineffective to control traffic congestion, as people coming from the airport don't get an access to the underpass. To get into the underpass, motorists have to take a slight diversion and make a U-turn from Weikfield Chowk, which is around 100 metres away.
