PIL, feasibility still hurdles in Akola airport project

Nagpur: While the state government is bent upon extension of the Shioni airport in Akola and has warned the Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV) to hand over land for the purpose within a month, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) continues to see it is an unviable project as the airport is suitable only for ATR category of aircraft (small carriers).

Moreover, on April 24 this year, the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court had ordered a status quo on the airport extension despite a Government Resolution (GR) dated March 4 giving official clearance for the project and Rs5.64 crore compensation for the 60.68 hectare land of the university. The PIL (No 22/14) was filed by former VC Balwant Bhatkal, who is president of Vidarbha Association for Research, Technology and Development.
