SpiceJet slams DGCA direction over bookings

New Delhi: Cash-strapped low cost carrier SpiceJet has hit back at aviation regulator DGCA, with the airline saying that the DGCA’s direction to it that future bookings be not more than one month in advance, will be a “counterproductive” restriction, even as top civil aviation ministry sources said on Saturday that “SpiceJet’s books are bad” and that the aviation regulator DGCA has just done its job.
Top ministry sources also pointed out that “bad books sometimes give the impression that safety may not be getting as much priority as it should”. Other government sources too said that SpiceJet’s financial condition was “bad” and that the airline urgently needed at least Rs 1,000 crore from an investor for “recapitalisation” if the airline is to be brought back to a financially stable condition. The DGCA had recently conducted an audit of all airlines. SpiceJet said in its reaction to Friday’s DGCA order that it would discuss the “pros and cons” of the order in a “cooperative” way with the DGCA. SpiceJet’s future revenues could now be badly hit by the DGCA’s restriction on the airline that future bookings be not more than one month in advance and is expected to further dent passenger-confidence in the airline after several flight cancellations by the airline recently.
