Stricter DGCA rules may cut flight delays

New Delhi: due to fog on December 16, one expected the situation to get worse as the season progressed.

However, for the first time, not just airport management but air traffic control and airlines are confident that unless visibility falls to zero and the airport is shut, unnecessary delays are unlikely.

"The directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) is extremely strict this year. Last January 57 flights were diverted in one day, leading DGCA to form a technical committee to submit suggestions on fog management. The committee formed standard operating procedures for each department and a team is present at the airport at all times to ensure rules are being followed. If an airline fails to provide a CAT-III compliant crew or aircraft during low visibility procedures, it will end up losing its slot," said a senior airport official. Meanwhile, Delhi International Airport (Pvt) Ltd (DIAL) has also made special arrangements for passengers inside terminals.
