Chennai: After playing havoc with flight schedules across north India, dense fog hit Chennai airport on Sunday morning, reducing visibility to 50-100 metres and halting flight operations for at least five hours.
Airlines had to delay 25 departures from the city and divert seven others to Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The heavy fog, uncommon in Chennai, disrupted the schedules of hundreds of passengers who had tickets for morning flights.
Airport officials suspended departures between 5.45am and 9am. Many passengers had to wait for more than three hours as flights started to take off only at 9 am.
Airport officials said the flights they diverted to Bengaluru were an Indigo Airlines flight from Singapore, a GoAir flight from Mumbai, an Air India flight from Thiruvananthapuram, an IndiGo flight from Kolkata, a Jet Airways from Mumbai and an IndiGo Airlines flight from Delhi. The flights were to land in Chennai between 7.35am and 9.35am. Officials also diverted an Air India flight from Dubai, scheduled to arrive at 5am, to Hyderabad.
