Chennai: Immigration authorities at Chennai airport on Friday nabbed a man who is said to belong to an international gang of gold smugglers and is wanted in nine cases of smuggling gold through New Delhi airport.
The accused, Mohammed Rubis of Kerala, was going to the immigration counter en route boarding a flight to Colombo when immigration authorities identified him as the person in a lookout notice issued by Interpol and stopped him. He told immigration authorities that he was going to Colombo and then planned to fly out to the Gulf. They informed their New Delhi counterparts.
Police said Rubis had been evading arrest for five years by travelling on fake passports. Customs officials said he had hoodwinked the New Delhi authorities many times by slipping away from them after smuggling in gold, mostly from the Gulf countries.
"Rubis had allegedly supplied many jewellers in Chennai and Kerala the gold he managed to bring into the country," an immigration official said. He was part of a gang, officials said.
