Happy times for travellers

New Delhi: There could be unexpected delights in store for air travellers in 2015. While the entry of Air Asia India and Tata-Singapore Airlines joint venture Vistara is set to shake the local market, a clash among aviation biggies – Emirates and Etihad from West Asia, German carrier Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines from South East Asia – for a larger share of the Indian pie is expected to bring down air fares.

Aviation experts expect the government to relax the norms for flying overseas, allowing both AirAsia India and Vistara to start international flights offering introductory ticket prices for flyers. This would compel rival foreign carriers to sell tickets at cheaper rates.

Airline rivalry and their resultant impact on airfares aside, the falling jet fuel price is helping carriers cut their expense and pass on benefits to consumers. As per an airline sector estimate, average jet fuel prices have fallen 16 per cent at Indian airports with cost of lifting fuel at foreign airports like Dubai and Kuala Lumpur being lower by 20 per cent.
