IGI saw less flight diversions last month

New Delhi:Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport saw a marked reduction in the number of flights diversion and cancellations this winter as compared to last year, according to data released by the civil avaition ministry. Flight diversions came down by over one-third, whereas cancellations came down from 53% to 39% between December 1, 2014, and January 5.

Civil aviation officials said the change was due to better flight management and coordination among various agencies. According to officials, only 45 flights were diverted to other airports this winter as against 71 last winter. Flight operations also increased during this period by nearly 67% to 4,683 flights from 2,808 as against last year.

Flight operations at the airport was shut for 30 hours altogether due to zero visibility compared to 15 hours last year. A better management was made possible by deploying CAT-III compliant planes trained to fly under low visibility conditions while operating in and out of IGI airport, civil avaiation officials said.
