Public hearings on Mopa from February 1

The State government will undertake public hearings in seven villages of Pernem taluka, seeking suggestions and objections on the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report on the Greenfield International Airport at Mopa, on February 1.
North Goa collector Nila Mohanan will preside over the public hearings along with officials from Directorate of Science and Technology and Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB). The hearings would be held as per the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) EIA notification of 2006.
GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that public hearing seeking suggestions and objections from the people on EIA report is must before applying for Environment Clearance (EC) from MoEF for the airport project. “The inputs of the public hearing would be forwarded to the Union Ministry for grant of EC,” he said.
GSPCB has already submitted a copy of the EIA report, drafted by Engineers India Limited, to all the seven panchayats, within the jurisdiction of the new airport project, for their reference. Government has entrusted the EIA study of the project to the Engineers India Limited, a government of India undertaking for total cost of Rs 19.70 lakh.
The EIA study has given the green signal to the Mopa airport project stating that there won’t be any major impact on air, water, or land resource or environment with the airport coming up at Mopa in Pernem taluka.
