Airport staffer held with gold worth Rs1.5crore

Mumbai: The instances of involvement of airport insiders in smuggling syndicate continues to be a cause of concern for security agencies as one more case came to light on Wednesday.

According to officials of Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of airport customs, an airport staffer and one of his accomplices were held for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold by concealing it inside a company envelop.

Additional commissioner, AIU (airport customs), Milind Lanjewar said that an employee of Celebi Nas, a ground handling service provider at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), was held with 40 gold bars worth over Rs 1.5 crore. The accused has been identified as Rohan Suresh Surve.

The officials said that Surve received the consignment from one Kirankumar Chaudhari, who arrived from Bangkok. "Surve was supposed to return the gold to Chaudhari after coming out of the airport terminal," said Lanjewar.
