Mumbai: With a change in regime, Mumbai is likely to be deprived of its first heliport. The Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP government has decided to shelve the proposed heliport project for at least the next few years. The project, which was proposed to come up at Mahalaxmi Racecourse, was strongly opposed by Shiv Sena then.
Highly placed sources confirmed that the government had decided not to go ahead with the project as the chief minister did not want to upset BJP ally Shiv Sena.
Building the first heliport in the city was one of the ambitious projects of former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan. After the Union defence ministry denied permission for a heliport opposite NCPA at Nariman Point, the then chief minister decided to shift it to Mahalaxmi Racecourse.
Despite emphatic opposition from Sena, Mr Chavan had pushed the project. Going a step ahead, it was also decided to take over BMC’s share of land at the Racecourse. The Maharashtra Airport Development Company had even made a request to BMC for handing over the land. MADC also completed an Obstacle Limitation Survey (OLS) on the site.
