Guns, reflective panels to keep birds away from runway

Bhubaneswar: Bird-scare guns and reflective films will be used at Biju Patnaik airport to scare away birds, which keep flocking near the airport operation areas.

The airport authorities have decided to spend Rs 54 lakh for installing the equipment to check bird menace around the airport.

The scare gun is operated by using a propane gas cylinder. A pipe to release gas is attached to the gun. When the gas is released, the gun releases an explosive sound at the interval that is fixed in the timer attached to it.
"The scare gun can spread the sound to up to five acres. We are planning to have multiple guns at strategic locations so that birds don't come to near the runway. It will be the best way keep birds and other animals away from the area," said airport director Sharada Kumar.
