Host of problems delay airport at Shirdi taking off

Mumbai: The runway and terminal building of the long-awaited airport at Shirdi are complete, and the Maharashtra Airport Development Company has applied for an aerodrome licence to commence operations for private aircraft, but a host of problems have ensured the project will be further delayed. A recent inspection by state officials revealed that there is no proper approach road from the airport to the Saibaba shrine, located 12 kms away, the ATC tower is yet to be constructed, new power cables are still being laid, and the airport is yet to get a water connection.

Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil said, "Work on the airport began over six years ago, and I was instrumental in obtaining Rs 50 crore aid from the Shirdi Sai Santshan funds for the construction. I did this despite public opposition as I wanted the project to be completed, but it is far from complete. It should have been ready by 2013 but successive governments have not taken a serious view of the project, and it has already missed two deadlines. I'm fed up with the lacklustre attitude of governments and have stopped pursuing the matter."
