Tainted Firms to Participate in Aero India

New Delhi/Bengaluru: In a major policy shift, the Union government has allowed scam-tainted and even blacklisted companies to participate in the forthcoming Aero India 2015, India’s largest defence and aerospace show scheduled to begin on February 18 in Bengaluru.

The previous Congress-led UPA government had barred such companies from participating in any defence exhibition.

Taking advantage of this change, Italian major Finmeccanica, whose subsidiary AgustaWestland is facing a CBI probe in the VVIP helicopter deal, is participating in the 10th edition of the show, which will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“There is no restriction for blacklisted firms to take part in a defence exhibition. Finmeccanica is participating in Aero India,” said G Mohan Kumar, secretary, Defence Production.

During the UPA government’s tenure, the Defence Ministry had barred AgustaWestland’s parent company Finmeccanica from the Defexpo show, held in New Delhi in February 2014, along with its other group companies like Selex, Alenia Aermacchi, Oto Melara and WASS.

Bolstering the ‘Make in India’ theme in defence manufacturing, Aero India 2015 will include sectors like defence manufacturing and airport infrastructure, besides aerospace, defence and civil aviation.
