Bhubaneswar: The municipal corporation will allow installation of telecom towers in the vicinity of Biju Patnaik International Airport only if the Airports Authority of India (AAI) gives a no-objection certificate (NOC).
The AAI sources said there were at least seven mobile towers around the airport - which could pose threat to flying aircraft, especially trainer planes used by students of the Government Aviation Training Institute.
Airport director Sharad Kumar said: "The telecom companies need to take an NOC from the airport authorities before erecting towers in the area. But, as the power of enforcement is not with us, the civic or development authorities can take necessary action. We are discussing this aspect almost at all co-ordination meetings of the airport environment monitoring committee."
Kumar said chief secretary Gokul Chandra Pati, who chaired a committee meeting yesterday, had asked the officials to streamline the issue of mobile towers around the airport for better air safety.
According to the rules, any high-rise structure around the airport has to get the mandatory NOC from the AAI.
