Bengaluru: Infrastructure Development Minister R Roshan Baig on Wednesday promised to take a delegation of legislators to meet the Civil Aviation Minister to request the Centre to take over the construction of four airports in the state.
In response to independent MLA Ashok Kheni during Zero Hour in the Assembly, Baig said greenfield airports were proposed in Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, Hassan, Ballari and Shivamogga, but works have been stalled in Kalaburagi and Shivamogga because of “internal problems” among the contracted developers.
In Vijayapura and Ballari, contractors backed out even before work began. In Hassan, the contractors have submitted the project development report, and it is yet to be approved.
Baig said in Kalaburagi, work on the runway was stopped midway and in Shivamogga, after constructing just the compound wall, the developers backed out.
In Kalaburagi, the contractors mortgaged the allotted land for `90 crore, but the financial institutions approached the Debt Recovery Tribunal later. But Baig maintained this would not interfere with the handing over of the project to the Airports Authority of India.
