Guard's shotgun goes off at IGI, triggers panic

New Delhi:  A private security guard's double-barrelled shotgun went off accidently in the cargo terminal at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport recently, prompting loaders and staff to run for cover. No one was injured in the incident that took place at a spot close to the main runway on March 11.

"Around 12pm, two guards of a private security company reached a private loader's office at the import terminal in a van to collect gold of a private bank. When they got down, a gun went off, damaging the left part of the vehicle," a CISF official said. The loaders and staff present in the area went berserk, fearing a terrorist attack. CISF inspectors took charge of the situation.
Private security agencies are still in charge of security at the cargo terminal. Security officials, however, said if the accused had any "malicious intention", the gun could have been aimed at anybody. Officials present during the incident said it was an act of negligence by the guard.
