Pune airport on busy list

Pune: Despite major space constraints and time slot restrictions by the Indian Air Force, Pune International Airport made it to the list of 10 busiest airports in the country. While it came in at number 10, both airlines and commuters feel that a top 5 ranking is possible.

According to statics released last week by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) for 2014-15, more than 40 lakh passengers travelled through Pune airport. This is the first time Pune airport is on the list, partially due to the increasing number of flights over the last two years. According to AAI sources, Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore are the first, second and third busiest airports respectively.

"If we exclude private airports, Pune can definitely move up to number 5. With the support of the Indian Air Force, we introduced many flights over the last two years. Air Asia started their operations this year and from Sunday, a third international flight will be launched. Two years ago, there were 47 flights in a day, which has now increased to 64. We have introduced many new facilities and are also pursuing the demand of additional land for the airport," said Manoj Kumar Gangal, airport director, Pune.
