Development of Karipur airport remains a dream

Malappuram: The development of Karipur International Airport is likely to remain a distant dream, as it would not be an easy task for authorities to acquire a total of 385 acres, evacuating more than 1,500 houses surrounding the airport.

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) requires a total of 137 acres for the works of the proposed international terminal complex and 248 acres for the extension of runway.

The authorities are now planning to acquire 137 acres in Pallikkal panchayat immediately, to start the works. Among the total of 600 families who live in the 137 acres, only about 50 have agreed to hand over their land to government.
Malappuram district collector K Biju has informed that all landowners who are ready to hand over their land to the government have been asked to attend the next round of negotiation talk to be held on April 27, at Malappuram. But the chairman of local-level action council of the landowners, Chukkan Muhammedali said that only 50 land owners are ready to handover their land. The fresh plan of airport authorities to acquire more land is unnecessary and it is not practical to rehabilitate such a large number of families, he said.
