'Need bus stand, not airport'

Bhogapuram (Vizianagaram): Nearly 3,000 farmers, fishermen, daily wage labourers and activists of all ages gathered at Bhogapuram on Friday to block National Highway-16 for nearly half-an-hour to voice their protest against the AP government's plans to set up the greenfield Vizag international airport at Bhogapuram and instead demanded a bus stand for their mandal.

The Kolkata-Chennai highway was choc-a-bloc with vehicles within a few minutes after the protesters staged a rasta roko. They displayed banners and demanded that the government stop the land acquisition process immediately or build the project on their graves. However, around 700 police personnel, who were deployed in the area, immediately swung into action and ordered the agitators to vacate the area.
