"Do you want us to sell our lands so you can fly in flights? We don't need an airport. We won't sell our land," said 45-year-old Sana Devudamma. The message was loud and clear — farmers do not want to part with their land so that the Andhra Pradesh government can go ahead and construct an international airport at Bhogapu-ram in Vizianagaram district, almost 75 km from Visakhapatnam.
On Friday, thousands of farmers gathered at National Highway-16 to bring traffic to a halt as a part of their protest against the proposed airport. There is stiff resistance from all the villages falling under the proposed area for airport.
Interestingly, the ruling Telugu Desam Party also joined a mass protest programme by all parties on Friday at the highway. We don't want to sell our land — the voice was firm.
Civil aviation minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju has been keen on bringing up a greenfield international airport in his native Viziana-garam. The area proposed for the airport is just 24 km from Raju's home in Vizianagaram town. The Chandrababu Nai-du government is very keen to develop three international airports at Vizianagaram, Vijayawada (Gannavaram) and Tirupati, making use of its influence as a partner in the Narendra Modi government.
