Air India flight over Tirumala rattles temple officials

Tirumala:  An Air India flight flew over the Tirumala shrine on Saturday which rattled the temple officials who have now decided to step up efforts to get the Seven Hills declared as a no-flying zone.

Air India flight 541 (an Airbus A 321) carrying 170 passengers was flying from Tirupati to Delhi via Hyderabad and was spotted by the temple officials flying over the shrine around 3 pm.

Immediately, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) joint executive officer K S Sreenivasa Raju called the Renigunta airport authorities and made enquiries.

According to sources, Tirumala is not a no-flying zone but aircrafts in general avoid flying over the shrine as much as possible.
Tirumala is on the right of Renigunta airport and flights normally fly straight after take off or turn left. "But in view of heavy clouds on the left and straight ahead on Saturday, the AI pilot sought permission from the airport traffic control authorities to turn to the right direction after crossing five nautical miles. Accordingly, permission was given," Varudu Venkateswar Rao, director of Renigunta Airport, told STOI.
