Airport authority hopeful of getting defence land soon for expansion

Coimbatore: Talks between senior defence personnel and Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials that was chaired by District Collector Archana Patnaik here on Friday has given hope to AAI officials that the transfer of 134.32 acres defence land to AAI for the expansion of the Coimbatore International Airport could soon be completed.

Defence Estate Officer, Chennai Circle, P.N.P. Sharma, Regional Executive Director for AAI, I.N. Murthi, Joint General Manager and Airport Director (in-charge) Mahalingam and District Revenue Officer D. Christuraj took part in the meeting.

District Revenue Officer (DRO) for Airport Land Acquisition, S. Gunasekaran, told The Hindu that they were in the process of acquiring 627.89 acres – in Irugur and Neelambur in Sulur taluk, Kalapatti in Coimbatore North taluk and Singanallur and Uppilipalayam in Coimbatore South taluk – for the expansion of the airport that has been pending for years due to various reasons.
