DGCA bans IAF vehicles from Amritsar runway

NEW DELHI: In its first crackdown on defence vehicles plying at military airports that double up as civilian airports too, the directorate general of civil aviation has banned Indian Air Force (IAF) trucks from crossing the runway at Amritsar airport.

The DGCA move comes days after a SpiceJet aircraft had a narrow escape when an IAF truck reportedly crossed the runway just as the plane was about to take off. "The truck was barely 50 feet from the aircraft. Somehow a major disaster was averted. The truck crossed the runway despite the fact that at that time, the signal barred any vehicles on the runway. DGCA has banned IAF vehicles from Amritsar runway and they will have to take the perimeter road inside the airport from now on," said an official.
