Five yrs on, airport project yet to take off

Meerut:  Lack of coordination among various authorities, farmers' pressure to increase land compensation, delay in the release of funds from the state government and inaccurate maps are some of the causes that have bottlenecked the progress of the ambitious airport project in Meerut.

More than five years have passed since UP government had decided to shift the proposed airport from Noida to Meerut. The then principal secretary for civil aviation, UP government, had issued a notification in this regard in February 2010 and had invited bids for appointment of consultants for setting up of the airport.

The Meerut Development Authority (MDA) was appointed the nodal authority. However, the project that was slated for completion in 2016 is yet to start.
It took years of negotiations before an an MoU was signed between UP government and Airport Authority of India (AAI) to develop seven airports in Uttar Pradesh, including one in Meerut, on February 24, 2014.
