Jammu: It has been over a decade since Jammu Airport was conceived, but the actual work on the expansion of the airport in Satwari has not started yet as the state government in facing constraints in shifting and recreating Army’s utilities and other public infrastructure at alternate places.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed between the Defence Ministry and the state government, the latter had to recreate and reconstruct Army’s utilities at Sunjwan, where 138 kanals and 12 marlas (seven hectares) were identified for the purpose.
A shorter runway of just 6,700 feet and a table-top airport makes the Jammu Airport the second most critical airport in the country.
The expansion project has missed many deadlines so far. Consequently, the cost of project has escalated from Rs 75 crore to Rs 100 crore in 2013. The latest deadline for the completion of the project is September 2015.
