Thiruvananthapuram: An alert team of air intelligence officials on Thursday intercepted a passenger, who alighted at Trivandrum International Airport with half kilogram gold worth around Rs 12.5 lakh. The gold was beaten into 49 wafer-thin sheets and was hidden under two duffle bags he was carrying.
The officials identified the passenger as Puthurabdulla Ahamed Mansoor hailing from Kasargod. He arrived in an Etihad flight EY 272 from Abu Dhabi that landed here at 4.30am.
The officials said that the innovative way of turning the smuggled consignment into wafer thin sheets almost helped him to hoodwink the security officials. The 49 sheets of beaten yellow metal were concealed in the false bottom of two black colored duffle bags containing clothes. The bags even got the customs clearance as a result.
