Govt advised to hold 4-season EIA at Mopa

Panaji: In a development that may pose a hurdle to the 3,000-crore Greenfield airport at Mopa, the Goa state biodiversity board has advised the state government to conduct the environmental impact assessment (EIA) study afresh for all four seasons at Mopa. The state government had earlier conducted only one season`s EIA for the airport. The biodiversity board took the decision after considering representations made by several NGOs and individuals.

Speaking to STOI, environment and forest minister Alina Saldanha, who is also chairperson of the biodiversity board, said, "We advised the state government that the EIA should be done full cycle, which will include all the seasons." She further said the reason for advising the state government is because "biodiversity changes according to seasons and certain flora and fauna are found only in particular seasons". The biodiversity board has received several requests from individuals and NGOs requesting it to conduct a new EIA for the Mopa airport.
