Thiruvananthapuram: The problem of finding a ‘helipad’ has hit the capital’s winged tourism dreams hard. The ambitious heli-tourism project proposed by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC), which was expected to take off on March, hit turbulence over the spots that it zeroed in on.
The locations preferred by KTDC are at the three major stadia in the city centre, Central Stadium, Chandrasekharan Nair stadium and University Stadium.
“With the availability of space to set up helipads, the project can commence anytime. We have entered into an agreement with a Bangalore-based company to provide the chopper service. When KTDC demanded, the authorities of LMS compound were willing to rent out the space, but the place is surrounded by too many tall tress and this can affect safe landing and take off. The plan was later dropped,” said KTDC chairman Vijayan Thomas.
Owners of the University stadium and Chandrasekharan stadium that were renovated for the National Games are not convinced about the idea to open up these spaces for the helipad or any purpose other than sports. Also it is learnt that the request put before Kerala University regarding use of its stadium has been rejected outright.
