Passenger traffic surging at AP airports

Visakhapatnam: Passenger traffic has surged at airports in Andhra Pradesh during the last five years. While Vizag international airport recorded the highest passenger footfalls in AP, Tirupati airport incidentally clocked higher passenger traffic than Gannavaram airport in Vijayawada, which is now the capital of the state.

Though Tirupati recorded passenger traffic of around 2.45 lakh in 2014-15 as compared to 2.31 lakh during the same period at Gannavaram airport, it has seen gradual decline in passenger traffic over the last three fiscals after the Kingfisher flight to Mumbai was withdrawn.

At the same time, Rajahmundry recorded the highest aircraft movement after Vizag in 2014-15 at 7,101, including commercial and private flights, as compared to 4,639 aircraft movements at Vijayawada airport and 2,985 at Tirupati airport in the same fiscal. Sources said that aircraft movements are higher at Rajahmundry as it is frequently used by lot of non-scheduled helicopters of oil companies such as ONGC as well as politicians.
