Turban trouble: Canada withdraws 'discriminatory' airport policy

Amritsar: A day after Sikhs there voiced their discontent, the Canadian government withdrew "the explosive trace detection" turban screening procedure at the airports there. The recently-introduced procedure required those wearing even religious headgears, including Sikh turban, to pat it and then present their hands for test of traces of explosives.

Canada-based World Sikh Organization (WSO) legal council Balpreet Singh told TOI on Wednesday that the country's transport minister Lisa Raitt announced the reversal of the new policy on Tuesday evening. In addition, Canadian minister of state (multiculturalism) Tim Uppal also issued a statement on the subject at the same time.

"The new screening procedure stands cancelled for air travel inside Canada," Singh said, adding that the reversal in orders came hours after WSO condemned the new policy.
